Thundermother – Dirty & Divine – 2025
Dirty & Divine is the sixth studio album from the Swedish all-female hardrock band Thundermother. I’m really not too familiar with the band but from what I’ve heard through the grapevine they’re supposed to have a great musical drive. I’ve also heard that this album differs a bit from the previous ones. I’ts nothing that I really have first hand information on though, even though I will expore further after listenning to Dirty & Divine.
The band seems to revolve around the founder and guitarrist Filippa Nässil. It might not be that unusual with very strong leaders and band that in principle is one persons vision. Some famous examples are Megadeth of course. But also Annihlator I guess, a bnad that wouldn’t exist without Jeff Waters. Come to think of it. the band most closely accosiated band with one person ought to be Motörhead. But when I read a bit about it on wikipedia I just to other conclusions as well. Yes, I know that you should never trust the info om Wikipedia but according the that information all member but Filippa quit the band – twice! Make you own conclussions.
But I’m not hear to write about band politics. I’m here to write about the music. To be frank I had really high hopes. And I’ve learned through the years, that high hopes is usually a bad thing. Although I can’t say that the music is bad in anyway. Because it isn’t. The songs are good and the performances from the the band members is also good. But I’m not really too fond of the production. It sounds a litte too radio friendly for me and especially the vocals seems very processed. In lack om better terms, the whole thing sound way too overproduced for me. Much of the raw energy that I heard about is missing and I think that the production is to blame.
I guess, it’s unavoidable to draw references to The Runaways. It’s still the most famous all-female band out there for me. But the musicla similarities jsut aint there. All-female, also Swedish act Sahara Hotnight would be a better comparission to The Runaways. For me, I get mot wipes to bands like Y&T and early Krouks I thimk. Even Swedish band Treat comes to mind. I’ts hardrock using bluesscales. No more, no less.
