Star Crystal – 1986 – An Alien Ripoff
Star Crystal is a movie you probably never heard about. And there’s a reason why. You really don’t need to see this one, believe me. The poster art looks promising and all and there’s a fairly thought-through plot in there somewhere. But it’s very poorly executed. The actors are bad, the music is unmotivated, and all that which you surely can relate to from a bad movie. But it isn’t hideously bad as you might expect. There are things about Star Crystal that could’ve made it watchable.
Well, it’s is watchable of course since I watched it but you know what I mean right? I think the intent was just fine with this one. There was a seriousity about the plot even if most of it easily can be traced back to films like Alien or other movies where an unknown being is killing off the crew one by one. what Star Crystal lacked though was some interesting parts. There is no suspense that other Alien knock-offs still maintain and there’s no real motivation for us to identify us with the characters. We don’t really care if they live or die and I certainly don’t care how the movie ends.
For die-hard fans and nerds
So, as I said. You might as well skip it if you’re not pathologically into cheap Alien ripoffs och spaceflicks. Please move on, there’s nothing to see here. But then again, there is always something worth adding to a constantly growing frame of reference. I wonder how many cheap science fiction movies that are out there that no one ever hears about. I mean, we all know the famous ones, Alien as I mentioned, and the Star Wars and Star Trek series. Even Space 1999 Battlestar Galactica ought to be common knowledge not just among the most dedicated fans and nerds?
Oh well, this is another one seen and done. Onward to the next one, and next one, and next one…
