Neopera – Tuba Mirum

Tuba Mirum

Tuba Mirum is an EP from the German band Neopera. I guess the band name is a play with words really. There’s the word neo in there, meaning modern or new. There’s also the word Opera in there and both words combined become just what the music sounds like. It’s gothic or symphonic metal with both death growls and soprano voices. It’s not that unusual anymore and we have words to describe it these days. I’m still fascinated by the concept though. Some bands do it better than others and I guess that Finnish Nightwish is among the most famous examples.

The funny thing about Neopera is that not all of its members perform the music. Jörn Schubert is dedicated to writing the music and as the founding member of the band, I guess it is his vision. So, it’s certainly composed music in all of its parts. It took me a few times before I could settle with the death growls but as I’m going on my fourth or fifth time listening to It now I like it a lot. There is a well-balanced sound between the classical, kind of operative feel and the Metal vibes.

The title Tuba Mirum translates to something like Trumpet of Wonder according to Google Translate. I wouldn’t know, my Latin is very rusty. But it makes sense. It kinda sounds like that. Check out this band, you won’t regret it!
