Mythica: Stormbound – 2024

Stormbound

Stormbound is the sixth movie in the Mythica series. The previous story kind of ended with the previous one – Godslayer. Therefore this is a new beginning of sorts. There are new characters and a new storyline, even though it connects a bit to the old one. I think it’s more out of necessity than something that adds to the story. It feels cheap and an excuse to build on a story that no longer exists. To be honest, my memories of the previous films are few. What I remember is the struggle between good and evil; it usually is in fantasy movies of this kind. I don’t really remember the characters and their traits. They could be telling any backstory about those characters without me having a clue. But why would they do that? I don’t think it has come to that.

But the old characters Teela and Thane are mostly present in description only. Someone in the present cast is referring to them and what happened to them after the evil was defeated. There are also some back flashes but not many. I feel like Stormbound is meant to stand on its own but with a little help from the original storyline. Perhaps not to scare away those who loved the original movies.

Disappointed

I was deeply disappointed with Stormbound though. There is very little adventure, very little magic, and a pretty uninteresting story. To me, it seems like it’s a new story to build another series of movies. But then again, it’s not interesting. It doesn’t generate any kind of curiosity about what might happen at a later stage. It’s mostly a bunch of people stuck in a cabin where a witch may attack them soon. Spoiler alert! Yes, there is a witch for a brief moment. A very unsatisfying witch according to me.

Furthermore, the story develops into some kind of who-dun-it mystery when people are found dead and apparently murdered. Stormbound is slow-paced and boring and not worthy of the Mythica series. It has some saving grace though. The acting is not bad and there is a possibility for something interesting to spring out of it in a future sequel. Not that this should affect this movie in any way but I’m feeling generous today.
