Lady Dragon 2 – 1993
Lady Dragon 2 has absolutely nothing to do with the first film. There’s no connection between them whatsoever. Apart from that Cynthia Rothrock stars in both of course. But she doesn’t even play the same person. She looks different and she has a different name. So there! Oh, wait. There is something else they have in common – revenge!
In this one, Cynthia Rothrock plays a fighter known as the “The Golden Angel”. The film starts off with her fighting in the ring and her husband is in the crowd cheering for her. At the same time, some robbers rob the mafia for a shitload of diamonds, but get chased and need to hide the diamonds somewhere. The convenient place is in The Golden Angel’s luggage. The plan is to pick it up later when the luggage has gone through customs and landed at the airport in another country. A masterplan don’t you think?
Revenge Theme
But to create a revenge theme Cynthia Rothrocks husband, a soccer hero in his country, Indonesia I think. Oh, there’s one more connection as Lady Dragon also tool please in the same Island country. Anyway, the robbers, who were these cool masks when breaking in want their stuff back, but can’t find it. By the way, they wore the same masks when robbing the mafia but I think the point of wearing a mask is to conceal your identity? As soon as they’re inside, both at the mafia and the later breaking in the soccer- and fighting stars home, they take them off. So, were they just for show so it would look cool on film? Stuff like that bothers me. There’s a lot in Lady Dagon that bothers me.
I guess the whole idea with calling it just Lady Dragon 2 was to cash in on an earlier success. Now, I don’t know how successful the first film really was but why else invent this “sequel”? The rest of the movie is then mostly an attempt to get the diamonds back from the bad guys’ side. They try to be as ruthless as possible but the husband, who found the diamonds in their luggage and stashed them away to help “his people” – which I suppose is one of the local tribes or their descendants. To make this a revenge story things get out of hand and eventually, he is killed for his stubbornness.
Rape/Revenge?
There’s also a rape being done by the main protagonist. So there’s one more thing these two films have in common. I wouldn’t go so far as to call them rape/revenge movies. But the ingredient is there. Not as a revenge motive I think, but more as a way to try to degrade “The Golden Angel” and to force the diamonds out of their hiding place. Now it’s time for the killing spree. You would be surprised if she didn’t track down them all and kill them, right? Well, she does. I don’t think I need to spoiler alert that. There’s also kind of a twist that you can see coming from a mile away. And sadly, I didn’t see her signature kick in this one.
