Johnny Bennet – Blurred Lines – 2012

Blurred Lines

Blurred Lines is an album I received with a request to write a review a few years back. Of course, I wanted to, after all, that’s why I write these reviews! However, I realize the challenge of writing about something that is so far from what I usually write about. My reference points are likely to be very… personal!

But I like what I hear, especially the first half of Blurred Lines. Which, if simplified, reminds me a bit of the classic Alice Cooper era from 1971-1973. The second half of the album leans more towards David Bowie, in my opinion, and is not as easy to listen to. I’m not sure about the distribution of the album, but since it’s a compilation of Johnny Bennett’s two latest albums: “The Violet Hush” and “Gone Missing,” it’s likely that the material from one of these albums appeals to me more than the other. But I haven’t done any research to track the origins. Stylistically, it falls somewhere within the singer-songwriter-pop-rock realm. Which is actually a very broad definition. It has catchy melodies, and after just a few listens, I’m convinced that I’ve already heard several of the songs hundreds of times on the radio. This is without them becoming overplayed!
