Hour of Penance – Cast the First Stone – 2017
One of the fun things about listening to bands and releases you never heard (or heard of) before is that you never know what to expect. There is usual a description on the site or article you got the idea from. But since I’m old, ancient, grey and don’t have a clue about what some of these genres mean I’m still surprised and try to put the pieces together. I read that Hour of Penance was a Technical Death Metal band which I have some idea what it is. I also read that it was a Brutal Death Metal Band (oh, the sub genres…). I’m glad that I didn’t have to invent those terms and that I could look it up. In my day we just called it Metal and that was that.
But brutal it is. I have no problem with that. I like aggressive music and I like technical and progressive guitar parts. I can even like growling to some extent but in this case it gets more painful than enjoyable. It’s too brutal for me! I like to be able to at least hear a few words here and there but I can’t. Not a single word actually. It made me think that there are actually no words, just sounds, on a couple of occasions but I don’t want to believe that.
This wasn’t anything that I got a kick off, but Brutal?! That it is! If that’s your scene, check out this one!
