Eight Eyes – 2023

Eight Eyes

Eight Eyes is a movie set in Serbia, at least to begin with. Later the plot is transferred to Macedonia I believe. It is a joint production between the USA and Serbia and half the dialog is in Serb language. The other half is in English. Of course, I have to rely on the subtitles to understand the Serbian parts. So, in essence, I can’t really tell which language it is. It just seems most logical.

This couple is on some kind of vacation in Europe. We soon realize that their relationship might not be their best. They have been married for about a year and it seems like there’s a bit of tension between them. They meet this Serbian dude who offers to guide them through places that they normally wouldn’t see as tourists. I guess the couple’s opinion differs a bit if they should go with him or not. At least after a while when it’s clear that they signed up for a bit more than they have bargained for.

Why Eight Eyes?

When watching Eight Eyes, I don’t know the significance of that title by the way, it’s obvious that something really bad i going to happen. It’s not really clear what. it’s a luring movie. We get drawn into it without even realizing it. This guide, who is called Saint Peter for some reason, acts very strange and he’s not taking no for an answer. He’s very persuasive. The tension between him and Cass, the woman grows more and more, while Gav, the man, seems drawn into a web of something more than he can chew.

On one hand, EIght Eyes is kind of a regular movie. It’s suspenseful and interesting up until the point when all hell breaks loose. Then it becomes something else. The closest association I get is to The Texas Chain Saw Massare. It’s not exactly the same of course. But we have the captivity, the masked madman, and some older figure, who’s really not alive but is treated as such by the family.

But it gets even stranger as the end is coming nearer. I don’t know what half of the imagery is, or even means at the end. Maybe it’s a metaphor for something, maybe not. But it’s very disturbing and not understandable to me. I feel like this part is so out there that it actually made me drop the rating a tad. Which is strange because I love weird movies. But still a very watchable movie I’d say.
