Deep Fear – 2023 – Diving, Cocaine and Sharks

Deep Fear

When you encounter poster art like the one for Deep Fear you immediately think that it’s a Shark Movie you’re dealing with. At least that was my thoughts. And, there are sharks in it to be sure. I do think that the poster is misleading though as the sharks are not the main subject of the film. I think the title itself – Deep Fear, aims at an incident that happened many years ag for the female lead in the movie. An accident where her parents were killed. I’m not sure if they were eaten by sharks or if they just drowned.

The acting is not bad. It’s not good either, it just is. The actors do a nice job, no question about it. But there’s not that extra notch that would have been needed it to get that extra ounce of weight. I find myself very uninterested in what’s going to happen and the fact that Deep Fear doesn’t have a proper teaser makes me wonder what the movie is going to be about from the very start. It’s often better to set up a Shark Movie with some people getting killed by a shark in the very beginning to set the atmosphere of the movie.

Great White Shark

But as I said, this is not really a Shark movie. If I’m going to be honest, I’m not sure what it’s about really. The main plot is just something that happens by accident. The female lead gets on a sailing boat, going somewhere where her boyfriend has already flown by helicopter for some unknown reason. Maybe it was communicated to us – the audience, but I didn’t notice it.

In any case, she encounters a shipwreck. Two people floating on the ocean and she must rescue them. This is, in hindsight, something she shouldn’t have done and she gets drawn into their dirty cocaine business- Oh, and there’s a Great White shark in the water as she is forced to help them bring the cocaine to the surface. It’s more a story like Dead Calm than an actual Shar Movie as the poster art suggests. I’m disappointed.
