Cyndi Lauper – Detour – 2016
I’m hardly an expert on country or on Cyndi Lauper but I recently discovered her album Detour and find it very enjoyable. For me, it’s an unusual experience since my frame of Cyndi Lauper references mostly is limited to songs like Girls Just to Have Fun and Time After Time. Both are pretty much ancient by now. Oh, and there’s True Colors, I know that one too. But, as a whole, I have no idea what Cyndi Lauper has been up to the last thirty or so years. The last time I heard anything about her was in the documentary series I wrote about a while back – Dark Side of the Ring. Apparently, Cyndi Lauper is a huge fan of wrestling. Who could guess?
But on this album – Detour, she explores the country genre or at least some kind of country-rock. I think it’s pretty easy to listen to and I find it very enjoyable and soothing. There are a few duets with some country-great on there as well, and, for me, those are the best songs on the album. Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, and Vince Gill appear in songs. And so do Jewel and Alison Krauss. I know very little about the latter two but it sounds nice and I think that it’s a nice album overall.
