Cobra Spell – 666 – 2023
666 is the debut album by Dutch all-female rockers Cobra Spell. These ladies has attitude! The music is bluesy hardrock that kind of reminds me on some of Whitesnakes material, especially the vocals. Of course I’m not saying that vocalist Kristina Vegas voice is similar to that of David Coverdale. It’s just the way that it’s performed and sung that seems highly recognizable. 666 as an album seems very 70’s classic hardrock overall even though the most obvious comparission for me is 80s Whitesnake. So, maybe my conclussion about the 70s sound was a bit premature.
I can also hear some classic Hair Metal bands in there. Ratt for sure, but also Mötley Crüe and Dokken. There are nice riffs here and there but never to that extent that it wanders of to a Metal album really. Just very close. I guess I would like to place this is the grey zone between the two quite closely related genres of Hardrock and Heavy Metal. But over all, there are more melody than riff so a bit more hardrock overall.
The melodies on 666 aren’t very catchy at first glance but they do the job. I’m certain that if I were to listen to this for a few times I would start to hum the songs. Another contradiction is that the way the 80s sound (or 70s) is produced make this seem fresh to me. Cobra Spell does something that band these days can handle. They deliver pure hardrock that still sounds like it’s from the good old days. I’m realize that I’m usually cheap when it comes to rating stuff. But I’m gonna go out on a limb here. I like this a lot!
