Babylon 5 – the Series

Babylon 5

When the Babylon 5 pilot The Gathering, first came out on VHS I rented it and really liked it. I know I rented another TV-movie later as well but it was never as good as the pilot. I don’t remember which one it was but I guess I’ll recognize it when I come to it. It doesn’t really matter.

What I’m trying to do now is to watch the complete series in order. That apparently means that I have to squeeze in the TV movies here and there in and between seasons. Now, for instance. I’m in the mid 4th season and there should be a movie – Thirdspace – there. So, I got all the seasons and almost all of the movies. I still miss some.

Babylon 5 is kinda unique in the sense that almost all of it was written by the series creator J. Michael Straczynski, especially during the 3rd season. I think Babylon 5 hold some kind of record with most episodes in a row written by the same author. It’s really cool and I think it brings the episode closer together. There are less “unimportant” sequences so to speak.

There are also clear differences in the agenda for each season. It’s more like chapters in a book than that of a season really. Things happen that makes you question if the bad guys really are the bad guys and if the good guys really are that good. I think that is pretty cool. There’s also not just the main plot – good vs evil – but a lot of politics. We are talking about a space station to host 250.000 people after all. Humans and aliens alike. A lot of interesting characters makes the series very interesting. I like it a lot!
