Accept – Breaker – 1981
The album art of Breaker is both kinda funny and immensely childish. I love the humor of it but I also hate the stupidity of it. I guess it was made that way to rebel against something. Hardrock- and Heavy Metal music were not really mainstream and I guess that Accept what to show that their music wasn’t for everybody. Maybe it’s even a comment to some critics who might have complained about Ud0 Dirkshneider’s raspy voice. That last part is solely speculative on my part though.
I can hear a development from the previous album I’m a Rebel to Breaker. Not very much but it’s clear that Accept starts to find their sound here. The songs leans a little more to metal than the punkish predecessor. I like it. I don’t think all the songs are top-notch. Far from it actually. There are a couple of them I just couldn’t live without though. First out is the live, (or faked live) version of Burning. This is the song that got me into Accept in the first place. It’s totally perfect. Maybe the fake crowd noise makes it better and more energetic, I don’t know. It would be fun to hear it without that element but I don’t think that’s possible.
And if Burning it THE song, Sone of a Bitch isn’t far behind. At the time the lyrics were very provocative. You couldn’t say things like Son of a Bithc, Kiss my Ass, or Cock Suckin’ Mother fucker back then. I don’t even know if you could say that now. But on the other hand, there are a lot of rappers with much harsher language than that these days. So I guess it’s not so bad after all. But back then it made Accept kind of dangerous I think.
There is the odd ballad on there, where Udo sings with a more normal voice but I, for one, like the pure energetic Hardroch/Metal aspects of this album. Did I mention BURNING is on this album? It’s hard for me to get passed. It’s one of the greatest Metal songs of all time for me.
